Heartlands 2018

Heartlands 2018 asks the nation-defining question: ‘What makes an Australian?’ 

The exhibition celebrates 70 years of diverse migration to Australia, from the first wave of non-Anglo migrants in the aftermath of World War II to our present day multiculturalism.

The subjects of the exhibition share their stories of fleeing war ravaged Europe in the 1950s, escaping the Military Junta of Burma, travelling by boat in the aftermath of the Vietnam war, seeking safety from the Eritrean conflict, fleeing Pinochet’s reign of terror in Chile, running from the Killing Fields of Cambodia, leaving behind the communist regime of 1980s Poland, surviving the Bosnian war in the 1990s, fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan and escaping the Syrian conflict.

The photo series has been gathered by a group of young migrant and local photographers, working together to capture the essence and humanity of a group of migrants who are helping to make Australia one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world.
