If you or a family member have been told you’re eligible for NDIS disability support, or you have a current NDIS plan, AMES may be able to help you.
The NDIS is a program run by the Australian Government that helps people with disability access activities, therapies and services that help them reach their goals. If you are eligible for an NDIS plan, it could include:
- Physical therapy
- Group outings & social events
- Classes/education
- Job skills programs
- Accommodation support
- Assisted living support
Every NDIS plan is different, depending on the needs of the client and the services you wish to include. That’s where our AMES disability support experts come in. We will meet with you to help you understand which programs will benefit you, and be there to support you throughout your journey.
NDIS Programs
NDIS structures its supports and services into two main programs:
- home and living
- finding, keeping and changing jobs
Each category has its own subcategories, which define the types of supports and services available to participants.
Home and living program
This program is the assistance NDIS extends to those who want to live independently and comfortably in their chosen environments.
Assistance under the home and living program includes:
Assistance with daily living
This category covers assistance or supervision of personal tasks, such as getting dressed, cooking or cleaning the household.
Home modifications
This involves changing a participant's home's structure, layout, or fittings to ensure it is accessible and comfortable. For instance, the installation of a ramp for wheelchair accessibility.
Individualised living option
If the NDIS participant wants to explore different ways to live–like living with a host or a housemate–this support ensures you get the right kind of help in that home.
Supported independent living
If the participant needs a significant amount of help daily but would still like to build their skills, NDIS funds that through this program. Under this program, in-house support staff can assist with daily tasks in and outside the home.
Short-term accommodation
If the carers are temporarily unavailable or the participant has to be away from their usual home, this support funds the care they receive in that temporary accommodation for up to 14 days a time.
Medium-term accommodation
Sometimes disability support is not readily available, and the participant has to be in a different home for longer periods, such as when the home underwent modification when a home is modified to be more accessible. In that case, NDIS supports medium-term accommodation for up to 90 days.
Specialist disability accommodation
If the participant has very high needs, they usually have to be in specialised housing along with others. They may also need high-level of support from carers. NDIS provides funding for this accommodation.
Assistive technology (AT)
AT is also a significant part of the NDIS's home and living supports. It includes equipment or systems that assist participants with everyday tasks so they can function more independently in their homes, communities, and workplaces. This can be as small as non-slip mats or as big as adjustable beds.
NDIS support for diverse backgrounds
At AMES, we specialise in connecting migrants with culturally responsive services that help them thrive in Australia. But it doesn’t matter what age you are, or your preferred language, we can help anyone understand the NDIS plan. We will communicate and help you understand your NDIS in the language you speak.
Support coordination
When you first learn about the NDIS, it can be a little confusing. That’s why we offer Support Coordination. This is a great program for people who are just starting their NDIS journey. With Support Coordination, you can meet with one of our friendly team members (Support Coordinators) who will help you:
- Understand what the NDIS is
- Understand how the NDIS works
- Select services that are in your budget
- Negotiate prices for the services you select
- Access your chosen services
- Build confidence to manage your NDIS plan on your own terms
